The national museum lagos was established in 1957,by the then federal department of antiquities. From its inception the museum became the headquarters of the department of antiquities and continued as headquarters when the department acquired a new status as the national commission for museums and monuments in 1979.
The museum has in its collection archaeological, ethnographic and natural history objects some of which date back 2000 years and show great diversity of material types including bronze, terra cotta, wood, stone, pottery, ivory, calabashes and gourds and wrought iron.
